Ujani Sadiya H.S. School

UJANI SADIYA HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL - AN OVERVIEW.

A cursory glance at Assam’s history of the time of entry of the British in 1826 and their contemporary American Baptist Missionaries will reveal that the aim of the Missionaries was to establish a base at Sadiya . Perhaps their aim was a bit further . It is said that their aim was to enter the forbidden land – Tibet . But that is altogether a different story . What matters for us is that the American Baptist Missionaries set the ball rolling at Sadiya what today we call is Modern Education . The missionaries could not stay here for a number of reasons . But whatever be the reason Sadiya boasts of oldest modern School in entire North East India ! Na-Sadiya Government Primary School near our very own Ujani Sadiya Higher Secondary School claims to be that very School , now relocated , established in 1834 , yes you have read it right 1834 ! A section of the academician beg to differ regarding the year of establishment of the School . But even if we ignore that , it is true that Sadiya which was landlocked and water locked till the other day , have a number of Govt. Schools which have celebrated their centenary jubilee long back . That means inaccessibility notwithstanding , there was a strong undercurrent of urge for spreading of knowledge in the entire region .

It is in this backdrop , just after independence , a few noble souls of upper Sadiya felt the need to set up an M.E. School at present day village Kukuramora . Since it was established much upstream ( Ujani – in Assamese ) to the then Sadiya ( Now recalled as Purani (old ) Sadiya ) , it was christened as Ujani Sadiya ME School . Students of rich families used to come to the School on elephant back ! Then a number of problems cropped up for the School which led to shifting of the School to present day Aathmile sometime in 1959 . Here also problems refused to subside and eventually the School is settled at it’s present location at village Dokani Gaon , Na – Sadiya . sometime in 1960 .

The erudite of the locality had not stopped longing for more . In 1961 , their insatiable quest for spreading of knowledge gave birth to Ujani Sadiya High School in the same campus . Then there was no looking back . With full support of the nearby villagers , both in cash and kind the school became a leading beacon of Sadiya sub-division . In 1984 the school got the much coveted Provincialised status . In 1985 she got another feather in her cap when with the introduction of Arts Stream the School is up graded to be known in her present name Ujani Sadiya Higher Secondary School . In 1995 Vocational Stream is added . Till now it is the only provincialised higher secondary school in the Sadiya sub-division . In August , 2017 the mother school in the same campus Ujani Sadiya M.E. School got amalgamated with Ujani Sadiya Higher Secondary School by a Govt. order . Meanwhile in May 2017 , history was created when Dhola-Sadiya Bridge ( India’s longest , 9.15 km , 184 posts ) , named Bhupen Hazarika Setu , was opened , opening a new vista for Sadiya . This become a boon for the School which was situated in a remote corner of Sadiya sub-division till then , become well connected overnight as the new highway is hardly 200 metres away , and the bridge is only six km away from the School !
With the removal of the ‘remote’ tag – thanks to the bridge – the challenges and responsibilities of the teachers and all concerned have increased manifold . There are still problems galore but thankfully all are enthusiastically geared up to shoulder the responsibility and to meet the challenges ahead so as to make the school a noteworthy seat of learning of the region in the days to come .
